The Lantern Road · Chapter 1 · The Last Lantern
The lantern at the corner of Spindle Street went out at a quarter past two, and because your name is yours to choose and your pole is the longest in the ward, it is your problem.
Someone is standing under it. A woman in a coat too thin for the season, holding a folded map against her chest as if it were warm.
“You’re the lamplighter,” she says. “Good. Then you know which streets are real.”
The stranger holds out the map.
